Kotlin is the official language for Android since 2019. It is safer (null safety), more concise and has coroutines for asynchrony. Java is still supported, but Google's new APIs are written in Kotlin. We recommend Kotlin unless the instructor requires Java.

Compose is a modern declarative UI framework, similar to SwiftUI. XML is the classic Activity/Fragment approach. Compose is easier to learn, requires less code, and is better tested. We use Compose for new projects.
